Tree climber

It was very strange to see a tree with roots-legs running up the mountain; and if you looked at it more carefully, you would find that it also had branches-arms, which it moved desperately in the wind. However, they did not rustle, because they hadn’t had any leaves yet, nor blossoms; only the rigid trunk propelled the tree into this sudden escape.

For us who suffered this summer due to water shortage, the dried river and the empty lakes, this tree should show the route of pursuit, the route toward the sources. However, as it was long ago when the snow melted down, the sun was concerned to caress each stone on the slopes. So the tree ran and the wind brought to our ears its brisk breath, its light running in its root-like shoes and the creaking of branches which had got used to their long immobility.

As far as the eye could see, the tree had not stayed still. Some people pretended that their feet had got tangled in the roots and the tree could not move further up. A woman who had brought a basket with sweet-smelling blossoms falsely boasted, “these are its legacy to us”. I was sitting there amazed at its courage; no other tree followed it; no other tree abandoned us. And the old plane which gave me some shade – as if it had sensed my thought – nodded contemptuously and turned its leaves elsewhere, obviously to avoid showing me the sadness caused by the loss of its life-bearing element.

At some time, the tree disappeared behind a slope and only some people said that they could still see with their binoculars the tops of its branches running incessantly. It had still a long way to go to the top. With so many legs, it won’t be tired from running. With so many arms, it will wave at all of us when it reaches the top and we will see it.

However, this climbing took the tree days. It could not climb up to the top as quickly as we – the humans – can. Moreover, since it was not used to climbing, it could have found many obstacles, hidden traps along its way. Some of us could still hear it running. The people with the binoculars could still see its tops. In fact, one of them said, kidding, that he had seen a branch sprouting leaves. However, the children believed him and kept shouting “Miracle! Miracle!...” for hours on end; As I watched them collecting dried grasses and throwing them at one another, I thought of the beauty of a tree blossomed like a child, of a child strong like a tree.

At some moment, the wind subsided and we worried that we could not hear the tree running or breathing. The people with the binoculars rubbed their eyes to relieve pain from long watching. I am sure that they suffered from optical illusions. However, I did not ask them a pair of binoculars to watch as well. Intuitively somehow, I felt that I would see the tree with bare eyes again, but simply on the top, a place without vegetation – due to height – only chosen by people who love height, magnificence, glamour and adventure. The flowers which that woman had put in the basket had probably wilted before one morning, one of those days when the horizon reveals even its ulterior motives, a man stood in the middle of that land, swelling with happiness and mumbling some incomprehensible words while looking at the mountain. In the beginning, we could see nothing and some people thought that he had gone mad after waiting so many days. At some moment, he raised his hand and we tried to detect the direction. He was a little below the top. In the summer, there, we could always enjoy an unobstructed view of this spot, because it was clear of trees and the sun’s rays always beat down almost vertically at dawn. In that location, a black spot, which resembled a fly for the nearsighted and a bear for the long-sighted, travelled the distance between the last slope and the peak. The spot moved so slowly that you could say that it had always been there, if you did not know the colours of the mountain. And, if you let your eyes go higher, you would see that there were mountains of snow around the spot. But how hadn’t you seen them earlier?I saw the tree waving at us, greeting us! The children whetted the wind with their screams; others had already started running to follow the traces that the tree had left. Some women actually prepared jugs, canteens, glasses…I…waited for the tree to talk to us….I waited to hear its echo, at least. I nodded to the children to quieten down; I saw the black spot fluttering happily, twirling, twirling…I think it is leaning forward…Oh, what happened to it?

I heard a cry and I saw the black spot disappearing into the void. It must have felt dizzy. Who is going now to search the gorge? Some bold people had already gone further up to the top, to the sources which the tree had indicated to us in its wake… damp earth, grasses, fresh traces…we haven’t seen the tree ever since.
However, water flows in abundance in our land and the voices of children quenching their thirst are the most enjoyable sound, the “most silent” expression of them. Occasionally, you can feel a child splashing water over the grasses angrily and aimlessly; however, none of them can forget that they enjoy life thanks to that tree; this is why, when they pass by the place which it uprooted from, they leave a flower which has just blossomed in order to nourish it again, so that they can see the tree running again energetically.

Ήταν λίγο πιο κάτω απ' την κορυφή. Εκεί, το καλοκαίρι πάντα βλέπαμε καθαρά το σημείο γιατί "καθάριζε" από δέντρα και το χτυπούσε ο ήλιος σχεδόν κάθετα κάθε που χάραζε. Εκεί, μια κηλίδα μαύρη σα μύγα για τον μύωπα ή σαν αρκούδα για τους πρεσβύωπες, διένυε το χάσμα ανάμεσα στην τελευταία πλαγιά και στην κορυφή. Η κηλίδα πήγαινε τόσο αργά που θα λέγαμε ότι υπήρχε εκεί από πάντα, αν δε γνωρίζαμε τα χρώματα του βουνού. Κι άμα άφηνες το μάτι σου να πάει ψηλότερα, θα έβλεπες πως κάπου γύρω της υπήρχαν λίμνες από χιόνι. Μα πώς δεν τα είχε δει κανείς πρωτύτερα;

Είδα το δέντρο να μας γνέφει, είδα το δέντρο να μας χαιρετά! Τα παιδιά ακόνιζαν τον άνεμο με τα ξεφωνητά τους, άλλοι έτρεχαν ήδη για ν' ακολουθήσουν τα ίχνη στην πορεία του δέντρου, μερικές γυναίκες ετοίμαζαν κιόλας κανάτες, παγούρια, ποτήρια... Εγώ... περίμενα το δέντρο να μας μιλήσει. Την ηχώ του· έστω. Έκανα νοήματα στα παιδιά να σωπάσουν, έβλεπα τη μαύρη κηλίδα να πεταρίζει χαρούμενη, να στριφογυρίζει, να στριφογυρίζει... σα να γέρνει μπροστά... ω! τι έπαθε;
